Hi Demetri,
I support teachers at Fredericksburg Academy. A few days ago, I created a ning site for independent school educators from Virginia! Social networking a wonderful way to grow professionally.
I am the general music teacher and 5th grade chorus director at St. John's Episcopal School in Olney, MD. I have been having a great time integrating technology this year and would love to see more music teachers get involved in NING. In fact, I have a NING for elementary music educators that I would love you to pass on to your music teachers K-12. Please pass it on: http://elemmusic4all.ning.com/
Hi! I am the MIddle School Dean at Stoneleigh-Burnham School in Greenfield, Massachusetts. I teach Humanities 7, ESL Spport (the 7th grade section), and Rock Band (in the upper school). I am not really a cat.
Hi All - I am the technology director at Waynflete School (coed, k-12) in Portland, ME. This will be a great site to send some of my teachers. thanks Demetri!
My name is Tami Brass. I've been teaching for 15 years in a variety of settings - alternative, charter, public, and now independent schools. For the past 9 years, I've been using laptops as a tool for teaching middle school students, first at a public junior high as a reading/language arts teacher and technology coordinator (7 years), and now as a middle school technology coordinator at St. Paul Academy and Summit School (since the summer of 2006).
Technology is no longer "just another tool" in my teaching... It's part of how I communicate - with students, parents, peers, etc. I'm not sure how I would teach without it. I know I wouldn't want to :-)
Although the bulk of my experience has been with Macs, my current school is Windows. Fortunately, the bulk of my tools are cross-platform or web-based.
Hi everyone. I was thrilled to see this discussion group devoted to Independent Schools. I'm a third grade teacher at Shorecrest Prep in St. Pete, Florida. I'm also working on a PhD in Ed Tech at the University of Florida. I'm looking forward to sharing ideas and getting to know everyone.
I think this is a good idea. I work on Long Island and enjoyed going to Mohonk Mountain House last year for the Tech conference with NYSAIS. This sounds like it can be a little like that without needing a sub.
I teach K - 8 computer and 1 - 8 problem solving - a busy schedule. Our school is small - 235 students. This is my 18th year here.
I look forward to discussions and meeting people.
Thanks, Demetri!

I'm David Rossell, the administrator of network services and planning at Norwood School (I used to work with Demetri). I keep the network and servers happy and handle major projects such as the roll-out of our shiny new IP phone system. Before sitting in the net admin chair, I was an ed tech coordinator and before then I ran the tech program at a tiny boarding school out in Iowa.
I am the Director of Web Services for Phillips Exeter Academy a secondary school in Exeter, NH. We are primarily a boarding school and are currently in our 227th year. We are continuosly working to provide the best technology solutions to support our mission and welcome the opportuniy to have a dialog about the possibilities here.
Hi - I'm Susan Kennedy> I work at Northfield Mount Hermon School in Mt. Hermon, MA. I teach religious studies, coach field hockey, and work as a learning specialist in our learning center. I recently finished a master's degree in teaching with technology and created a site in First Class for all of the faculty to explore on their own. I'm grateful to have this network. Thanks, Demetri.
My school is working with Michael Horn on our next school plan. Michael has graciously allowed us to share his videos with you. We will be using these videos to explore and apply Disruptive Innovation theory to our next school plan.
I am haunted by more failure than success because of failing to adjust my professional development design to match current personal and system realities. But these failures have created opportunities as well. Here's how.

Laurie,
You are at the heart of what motivates adults to learn. Excellent. Most of my failure had to do with my inability to connect meaning, purpose, and passion to learning that helped teachers improve teaching (this means doing something diffe...
Hi Preston,
I think that PD – and this refers to all types of PD, not just PD related to technology – should encourage and support learning:
• within one's area of expertise
• within one's area of passion
• that complement's one's area of experti...
Time is our enemy, for sure. Sadly too much PD is designed around time and budgets. But honesty is encouraged here as well.
Time is required as teachers deconstruct and construct ideas while creating predictability and control in ready-to-use mat...
Thanks, Liz. We just haven't had much luck with getting teachers to give up those blocks, at least not on a consistent enough basis to make any real progress. I hope you see some real success in making this paradigm shift.
I used it pretty actively for about two years and ultimately found it more annoying than useful. Keeping a decent signal to noise ratio took too much care and time. I'm glad others find it wonderful, but it didn't really work for me.
Where is the teacher's time coming from to engage in these more personalized approaches to PD? We would gladly do more of this sort of thing with teachers, but even those motivated to do so have a lot of trouble making time for them.
