Independent School Educators network

Hello everyone!  I am excited to make connections with everyone at the retreat and hope we have great weather.  In this session we will be exploring Personal Learning Networks (PLN's) for teachers and students.   We are anxious to share your experiences in developing your PLN with teachers and students.  Come share your successes and your failures! What resources are you using to contribute to your PLN?  We will discuss our personal journeys through this process and are anxious to share ideas and resources.

Thanks for posting this, Sandy. I too am looking forward to seeing everyone at St. Michael's. It is always a wonderful time to connect with old friends and meet new ones. I am really looking forward to our discussion on developing and learning through a PLN!

Notes from session

Technically these are more just questions we asked and discussed. Great comments and suggestions from all! Thanks Chris and Sandy! Feel free to add :)

- Discussing how there are many different forms of PLN- Twitter

- Can Facebook be a valuable professional tool in addition to using it personally? Should we create two accounts to separate?

- Benefits of LiveBinder- a great visual way of organizing information and grouping along with Diigo

- Twitter discussion- what are hashtags and how to organize them? is there an easy way of organizing information on Twitter so it's not becoming overwhelming?

- How can we teach students to create a PLN? They will need to do it in the future, what are the first steps we can take?

- In classroom blogging, it's important to lay the foundation with safety and "respect" for blogging. In addition, it teaches students the basics (how to embed, cluster maps, etc) and helps to keep them involved and engaged.

- Comments4Kids helping teachers and students connect with blogs on specific topics

- Diigo- how to use it in the classroom? Connecting with a Diigo in groups and sharing resources.

- Pearl Tree- http://www.pearltrees.com/ resource shard by Shannon Cheston @ Calvert School. "A place to collect, organize, share, and discover everything on the web."

- Come to edcamp Baltimore 10/20 Digital Harbor High School, Baltimore, MD #edcampbmore

Pearl Trees - great for younger kids. You 'pearl' a site and it drops it into a traditonal 'web' with topic in center, and bubbles around that topic that are preselected sites for their research or investigation.
This workshop was great, Chris and Sandy! Thank you so much for the resources. I have bookmarked your livebinder and will use it all the time. You inspired me to get back tweeting too! It's my mid-year resolution! Thank you for presenting!
