I'm looking forward to seeing everyone at the retreat this year and have heard great things about Gary Stager, our keynote speaker.

If you can bring an iPad from your school, please do!! I will bring one of our school's iPads so you can see what apps we use and how we organize them. I'd love to see what you are doing, too! Check out the links below for some great apps, reviews, and lesson ideas:

15 Ways to Use the iPad in the Classroom

107 Favorite iPad Apps for the K-8 Classroom

I put this wiki page together for our teachers who are piloting iPads. I will certainly be happy to add to it as we meet next week.

Thanks for coming to today's session! The notes are below. I will post more links to helpful resources later this afternoon!

General Notes

  • Technology integration means something different than it used to…using a projector or accessing a few websites isn’t good enough
  • Give the students a tech tool they can use to create something
  • There is virtually no learning curve with the iPad
  • Students jump right in and know how to use this technology
  • Teachers reluctant to integrate tech in the classroom in the past now have a tool they can easily use with the students
  • Remove the fear
  • Pay close attention to the end result and the excitement generated in the classroom
  • A great way to appeal to all types of learning styles: visual, auditory, kinesthetic
  • Even if you only have a few iPads to use with your students, they share amazingly well

iPads can be used for much more than apps

  • Record your voice
  • Take photos
  • Record live video
  • Make movies
  • Take notes
  • Test fluency for reading
    • Email the audio samples to parents
    • Share with the students

Get students to work collaboratively

  • Write a poem or story where children pass around an iPad and add a line to the poem or a page to the story
    • Story Patch app
    • Comic Life
    • Toontastic
    • Send students on a scavenger hunt where they work in teams to collect photos or bits of information
    • Have students interview each other and use iMovie to put it all together

Educreations App

  • Search for lessons by subject area
  • Create your own tutorials
  • Upload photos
  • Record your voice
  • Practice spelling words
  • Have vocabulary challenges
  • Use simply as a whiteboard for a game show review session

Discussion Notes

  •  When you set up email accounts on the iPad, set it up so you can send but no receive
  • Use Dropbox to transfer files back and forth between devices- helps with the issue of emailing files to others
  • Bretford charging and syncing cart highly recommended
  • Use Jamf to push out apps to devices- need a specific Apple ID for each iPad- can select specific iPads
  • How do we ask our students to demonstrate their learning? Create something, instead of turning in a paper assignment
  • Pictello- book creation app
  • Book Creator- upload the books to Dropbox and iTunes
  • Mo Willems- Pigeon App
  • Check out Emily Auerswald's Pinterest Page for great apps!
