I'm really looking forward to everyone sharing math ideas at this Breakout Session... I see this as a great opportunity to exchange ideas, tools, and techniques. 

Before we meet, please think of a math skill or concept with which students struggle and which you think could be improved by using technology tools.

It could be very skill-specific (how to form equivalent fractions) or general (how decimals and fractions relate to each other). You may be looking at working on this concept with a specific ability level of kids or with a whole class. 

Please post the topic you're thinking of on here, and explain why you've chosen it. As we start posting, please take a look at what your peers have listed and start thinking of ways that we could help each other find a solution using virtual manipulative tools. Comment on here if you'd like, or save it for our meeting time. Bring your laptop to the breakout session, and be ready to demonstrate and share your ideas.

Looking forward to exchanging ideas at this session.  The teachers at my school are interested in interactive apps or SMART board activities that address the concepts below:

Kindergarten:

  1. coins and their value
  2. counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s

Second Grade:

  1. fun ways to practice ( and drill) on basic + and – facts
  2. what equal means when you have a problem like 4 + 5 = 2 +
  3. geometric shapes to make and name
  4. equivalent fractions
  5. place value: Is there an app that shows why ones have to be moved to the tens place in addition? and conversely, why one has to (borrow) or trade tens to ones for subtraction.  The subtraction part is the trickiest for 2nd graders.
  6. measurement: length, perimeter, area

Third Grade:

  1. telling time

  1. place value

  2. adding double digit number without regrouping

Math teachers at my school--I'm an administrator--pointed to several concepts that they anticipate they could cover more effectively and meaningfully with technology: equivalent fractions; operations with fractions, especially division, and securing a conceptual understanding of why we proceed the ways we do; finding the volumes of three-dimensional objects; and place value, including in particular in numbers with decimals.

... and one more suggestion from the Math teachers at JPDS: telling time and handling lapsed time problems.

I am very excited for this session.  We are interested in several of the topics that have been mentioned! Finding the missing addend and comparing to find how many more are additional topics that I am would love to get ideas on how to incorporate techology as a learning tool.
