FirstClass 11 has been out for a while. Open Text Social Workplace (OTSW) 1.1 is due very soon. This provides a very secure private social networking facility that is private to your school. It's a great place to interact with students, parents, alumni, without exposing them to the mall that is Facebook and other social networking sites. Note it doesn't require a commitment to FirstClass (i.e. there is a standalone version).

2. You can't prevent students from creating communities, but you can prevent them from sharing with anyone else. Users need Share Conference permission to share communities.

The second one is trickier because the blog lives in a "my shared documents" conference on each users FirstClass desktop, but I'm pretty sure you could do it. On the other hand, these blogs are all "local" so there is no great harm in letting other local people see them, I think.

Has anyone here upgraded to FC 10 and the Social Media package? If so, I have a few questions...

1 - Did you run into any problems or unexpected changes with FirstClass itself?

2 - On the Social Media side of things:

- Can you limit the permissions of students in creating communities? In other words, can you prevent them from creating communities, but allow them to be added to existing communities by teachers or by requesting membership?

- Can you prevent students, as a group, from creating blogs, but still allow some students to create them by adding them to a custom group?

For those of you attending NECC, I want to extend an invitation to our FirstClass Customer Reception on Monday, June 29.

The event includes food, drinks, great people, a short presentation from one of our customers, and an iPod Touch give-away. (Surely the iPhone client will have been released by Apple by then, right???)

Can anyone who has moved to google apps or other "cloud" solution comment on bandwidth requirements if everyone is working/uploading/downloading through the external pipe?

@Jan - You don't give up your unique email address/domain when moving to Google Mail from Firstclass. Everyone at your school will still have the same extension. We're in week three of a six week migration plan with June 15th as our transition date. If you have any questions at all, drop me a a note. I have to say that this transition process has been an absolute blast! Good luck if you decide to go with Google for your collaboration needs!

I'm tempted to move away from using FC now that we have designed a Drupal CMS that replicates some of the better features of FC without the clunk. Others who are moving to Gmail; are your teachers willing to give up their unique school address?
