I'm a Spanish teacher in the upper school at Rye Country Day School. I teach level 1, honors 2 and 4. I'm interested in learning about other teachers' experiences with hispanohablantes, or heritage learners.

I currently teach high school French in addition to my adminstrative responsibilities. I'd be interested in learning about the experiences of teachers who are teaching to students for whom French or Spanish is a third language. I've had several over the years and I find it to be a very interesting learning experience both for me and for the other students in the classroom.

A lesson in tolerance and perseverance: I teach a Middle School Exploring Languages course at an all-girls' school and normally I am amazed at their enthusiasm and curiosity for languages and cultures. This fall, however, I came to class excited to teach a short Spanish lesson on colors through an exploration of the paintings of Picasso and Frida Kahlo. The students were able to use color vocabulary and some emotional descriptions to describe paintings from Picasso's Blue and Rose periods. Yet they were easily sent off track when I brought out the book on Frida Kahlo and our only native Spanish speaker from Mexico exclaimed, "I hate Frida Kahlo!" She being the "authority" on all things Spanish, the other students began to join the tirade with, "She's ugly!" and "Why are her eyebrows so ugly!" What's worse, they had lost all sense of the purpose of the lesson and began speaking in English. I knew I had to bring them around somehow, so I began to tell them the story of Frida's life and read from some poems she had written. They became more interested in her paintings when I told them about her accident. They were most interested in the painting entitled, "The Two Frida's." I talked with them about beauty, and showed them how her eyebrows were not so thick in her photographs as in her actual paintings. I began to ask questions in Spanish, and this seemed to turn the whole class around. At least, all but perhaps our very opinionated Mexican student. Finally, we were able to use our Spanish vocabulary to describe the colors and voice both our positive and negative opinions in Spanish. Whew!
