Independent School Educators network

We currently have Moodle working across all subjects in our school, but there is a real need for students to present their work. I have briefly looked at the demo of Mahara. Does anyone use Eportfolios successfully across all subjects and which do they find works best.
Moodle, Drupal, Mahara ????

Thanks

Hi Patrick,
Welcome to this network! I hope we hear from some people in response to this question, since portfolio construction and assessment can be such a richly rewarding educational tool when well-implemented.

Here is a link to using drupal as portfolio:

Another approach to this, which might merit examination would be to use a ning or blogging site as the portfolio tool. For instance, if each student use their profile page of a ning as the place to upload examples of work and to build a portfolio over time. A blog could be similarly used. I guess that neither of these would allow for much organization, since both tools would typically display content according to a chronological sequence, but on a ning profile page, you could use the "text" block to allow for some degree of customized organization. One possibility with these tools is the ease with which others could comment upon portfolio work, and the ease of the tools themselves.

I would love to get some recommendation for schools that have made significant progress building a student e-portfolio program.  Any ideas?

Hi Patrick,
We too use Moodle across all grade levels (6 - 12). We are also looking at Mahara and believe it will be a wonderful addition to our Moodle. We also use the data base module in Moodle for storing student work for presentations. All the students in a class can access it, drop their presentation in and then see their classmates.

We are pretty excited about Mahara and integrating it for next year. I'll be playing with it more this summer to make it student ready by August.
Hi Vicki,
Thank you for your reply, we too are looking at Mahara for next year. Do you know if it is bug free yet, have you tested it out?. I have just looked at the demo and was very impressed at the freedom to layout students work and ease of use. Is it as good when you install full version?
It would be great if we could keep in contact over the integration period to support each other with ideas etc.
I look forward to hearing from you,
Thanks
Hi,
Do you know if you can link the markbook in moodle to the eportfolio in mahara, so that the portfolios can be marked electronically as well.
any other features you know about that i can use to sell the idea to our school would be great.

Thanks
Hi Patrick,

It works very well if you use an 'online text' assessment activity in Moodle and then ask the student to post to it when their portfolio in Mahara is ready. Many students paste a ink but they only need to submit really. The assessment then operates as per normal in Moodle with email notices to the tutor when submitted and to the student when marked and with marks appearing in the gradebook. It works very well.

Hi,
Thanks for the response.
I have just started playing about with mahara and trying to link with moodle accounts.
There was a problem when a user has a photo attached to their profile in moodle. They then could not open Mahara.
Have you come across this.
is there any chance of seeing some of your mahara portfolios.

Thanks
