want to test it? let x=1 (a file not very important to you) vs. x=10 (a file that your life depends upon).

please note, z cannot be equal to zero (because a file always exists in at least one location), however in that scenario y equals zero, because no back up copies have been made. Where x=1, y=0, and z=1, the liklihood of a crash is 1 over 1, or 1. Where x=5 (file is important), y=0, and z=1, liklihood of crash = 5 to the 15th over 1 or 30,517,578,125. By making a back-up copy in another location (y=1, z=2), the odds improve to 5 to the 15th over 2 to the 18th or 116,415. Okay, so my math is a little fuzzy, but you get the idea. Maybe you can improve the formula so the odds actually make sense? ;-)
