Internet Safety

A Task Force has been formed by the Berkman Center (Harvard) to address internet safety. This group will work to find technological ways to ensure child safety online.

The APA has released some interesting research showing the actual threat from online predators to be much less than the popular media would have use believe.

Greater technological safe gua… Continue

Copyright Cops

I attended an event in Second Life that might be of interest. "Beating the No U-Turn Syndrome: A New Approach to Teaching and Enforcing Copyright Compliance" by Doug Johnson. The text of this presentation is available on Dou'g wiki. Here are my notes from the evening.

He began by talking about the image of the LMS related to copyright. Curre… Continue

Making connections

As I am helping to organize and host the first ever gathering of NCAIS school librarians some questions have come up. Many of the NCAIS member schools are not members of NAIS. I also am discovering that many members of NCSLMA are not members of ALA/AASL. So, I'm left wondering - what are the ramifications of this disconnect between membership in local/state associations and… Continue

Challenges

Amid the "Golden Compass" storm a challenge over the use of "How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents," (http://www.newsobserver.com/news/story/829888.html) has been filed in a public school system here in North Carolina. In an unusual twist the education board has ordered administrators to use most banned book lists (such as those created by ALA) to weed the system's collection of "potentially" controversial books. Ernie,
I think we should try one more time to get some feedback on the wiki. Can you send another note out to ISS? Then perhaps declare it done on Mar. 1. Will that work?

Ernie - Because of some other commitments, I won't be at mid-Winter. However, my colleague, Alice Bryant, will be there and is a great resource on the topic. I'm happy to contribute to the wiki, but Alice should help make decisions about the annual conference as she will probably be our representative there too. I'm hoping to fit it in, but I only have a limited number of conferences I can attend annually! Keep in touch, though, This is a topic on which I am passionate!
