Back in 2003 there was an interesting discussion on the ISED ListServe in which a number of people, myself included, speculated about computer use in our schools in 2013. A summary of that discussion is attached. 2013 seemed a long way off in 200...

TIAA/CREF Quarterly Statements, Frustration, and Accountability

<* warning, a political post *>

I received my TIAA/CREF quarterly statement yesterday. Yet another loss of value. I take a long term view and believe/hope that much of the value will return by the time I retire in 10 or so years.

However, if we don't handle the current financial mess well it might not. The Japanese stock market hasn't come close to recovering from its high during their real estate bubble 15 years ago.

The frustration is caused by my belief that this financial disaster d… Continue

Graphical Representation of the Power of Today's Computers

It is easy to forget how powerful computers have become. A video like the one linked below is a good reminder of the information processing power inherent in current information technology.

I've already done that with one person I know is from a CA school, and I just sent an email to our PD Directors listserv telling them about this site.

Hi,
Yes, of course I know Barbara. In fact, I was planning to email her and our PD colleagues (who get together every year at NAIS) to let them know about this network because we've been talking about starting one of our own. What we do in California that is somewhat like what you do is this. We sponsor two programs annually which alternate regions in alternate years. For instance, the Regional Meeting is in the South this year. This is a one day gathering of 2000+ teachers and middle level administrators who come together at one of our K-12 schools to present and attend workshops (in three sessions) that are put on largely by other CAIS teachers. One of the 14 subject/grade level areas is Technology. Additionally, we bring in a Featured Speaker who presents in all three sessions. This year that speaker will be Rob Evans.

What is happening in the North this year is what we call the Professional Days. A half-to-full day workshop in each of the same 14 categories is planned and hosted by members of the Professional Services Committee in the region. This year the tech person on our Northern Professional Services Committee is hosting a day on the use of the SmartBoard. While use is becoming more and more widespread in our schools there is still a gap in knowledge re: how to use it effectively in the majority of our schools and teachers.

Hi, Fred, I'm just now getting around to looking at Ning and its educational use. Two of my language teachers plan to use it for their teaching this year. Believe it or not, I was introduced to it first by the Jr. High School that I worked at in New Orleans at least 20 years ago. It was destroyed during Katrina and they have established a ning to reconnect.

Hi Fred,

I am new to the group and have a question: What would be the best way to identify a teacher interested in having her/his class collaborate with my Ninth Grade World Religions Class on a technology-based project?

Thanks,

Fred, I've been workign with Mike Lucey from SketchUcation and we're going to "open" soon a SketchUp forum for teachers and students, modified by yours truly. Are you interested in paricipating, or being one of the moderators? You'd only have to pop in from time to time. We're lookng for examples of student work, too, and I imagine you have tons of it. More info on my blog. http://3dvinci.blogspot.com/2009/06/bleg-calling-all-teachers-and-students.html

I discussed moderating a youth forum a while back with Coen and Mike from Sketchucation, but we sort of dropped the ball on it ;-) I'm still in touch with them often, so I'll bring up the issue again. I'm looking for kids' models for my own site, on my Case Studies page (which is currently empty because I haven't had the time for it). So if you or anyone else has some student SketchUp work to contribute, please send it my way! I'm also always looking for edu-related material for my blog: http://3dvinci.blogspot.com/

BTW Fred, I believe it was your (former?) student who gave a talk at last year's SketchUp Base Camp? I'm blanking on his name but he was extremely impressive!
