Brilliant People Who Care; Reflections of NAIS '09

Just about a year ago today I was returning from one of my all-time favorite cities, The Big Apple, after attending NAIS’ 2008 Annual Conference. For those that know me well NAIS ‘08 was a life changing event for me professionally. The speakers, the sessions, the ideas and the connections I made have served me well this past year and have dramatically changed how I view that which I do.

Today, as I reflect on the past year and consider how NAIS 2009 has impacted me, I am reminded of a quote fro… Continue

The Challenge of Change; A Symbiotic Relationship

Back in August 2008, as we began the new school year, I gave a short presentation to our faculty and staff on the challenge of change. The reason for the presentation was during that summer we rolled out a new website and a new campus wide database in one fell swoop.

Going in I knew there would be many challenges associated with such wholesale change on a school campus. Perhaps, however, being the ever optimist that I am, I did not foresee how greatly challenge and change were intertwined.

Sin… Continue

"...when imagination is joined to common purpose"

Regardless of your political beliefs nary a fellow could argue that President Obama penned what could be considered the seven most critical words spoken during his inaugural address.

Why those seven words? For me, those seven words are the key to economic reform in this country. They are the key to political reform in this country. But more critical than any other they are the key to education reform in this country.

We, and by we I mean any administrator, faculty member or student committed t… Continue

Having trouble explaining Twitter, RSS Feeds, Wikis, and the like...

to those faculty and non-techie folks then you might want to check out http://www.commoncraft.com/ a company out of Seattle, WA. They use a simple format and real-world stories to make sense of complex ideas. In short, think of UPS' commercial concept used to explain twitter, RSS feeds, blogs, wikis, social bookmarking, etc.

Here is an excellent example of their twitter explanation - http://www.youtube.com/user/leelefever

Cool! How do you like RobotC? For the reasons I mentioned above, I haven't found text-based programming environments to work with middle schoolers, but I wish that we could "drop down" from the graphical environment in NXT-G to text a la Gamemake...

48 Hours To Go! So exactly what is involved in participating you ask? It is as easy as 1, 2, 3. See the 10balloons wiki for details.

I have a small class of 10th-11th grade students programming NXTs with RobotC, soon to add Tetrix motors and pieces, and the most rewarding part of the experience so far has been watching them post their projects on the RobotC.net project forum. T...

We're thinking of using the Cambridge A level exams in place of the AP's and wondered if anyone else has had any experience with the Cambridge program. I did, a hundred years ago, in school in india, but it has changed completely since then. You c...

Greetings! There are some differences in the U.S. and Standards Editions. First off, the Standards materials are K-5, Primary Mathematics are K-6. (Although I understand the Standards Edition may eventually continue through 8th grade) The only ki...

Fred Bartels Wondering how to get many schools involved in the Darpa 10 balloon challenge in just three days?

I set up a wiki titled 10ballons last night where those schools that want to participate can add themselves and the contact person. This is only going to work if we get a lot of schools participating so we should 'fully exercise' all the web 2.0 s...

Sounds like fun. If each member school on this network made an announcement at his/her school assembly, how many students would we have out there looking to spot the balloons? With roughly 3000 members on this network, I'd guess we have at least 1...

About the $40,000. In the case that an ISBFT should develop, and should that team win the contest, my thought is the money could be donated to Kiva. Just imagine the headlines in the New York Times. Independent School Students Win DARPA Challeng...

Hi! It's interesting to see how close many of us came in many ways to what is currently happening. Reading Laurie's makes me wistful as we seem to have become less student-focused in this country, at least in public schools which subject to NCLB,...
