Hey, Peter, I think I called you a dystopian back in 2003... :) I wasn't too far off with "all student work will go to the web (public and protected)," and I still rather like the life-long learning portfolio concept...

Jim, Great surveys! Of the two the MS survey seems a little stronger. What I feel is missing from the HS survey is questions that capture the ubiquitous fluid use of computers that develops over time in 1:1 schools. For instance, I see a lot of s...

Demetri, thanks for the link to your survey results. Here's a quick summary of my last surveys: http://www.k12converge.com/?p=255 Okay, to move forward, maybe we should discuss some options. First, how many questions? It's easy to make too long ...

The Worms Crawl In, The Worms Crawl Out

When is a worm a good thing? When it makes you upgrade your Wordpress software and start blogging again.

Thanks to a warning from a colleague, I learned that older versions of WordPress were being targeted by worms. My blog was running on a "very old" WordPress version, so this weekend I did a long backup, and then revamped it back up to the latest version. I did the same for the family sailing blog, and our photo gallery site.

Better still, I learned how to post directly to the blogs from my… Continue

Cruising Along to a FinalSite Launch

We're approaching the launch date for our new Finalsite main web site.

This week, we finished the uploads of calendar layers, athletics schedules and rosters, and other data. We're now tracking down blank pages and finishing roll-out plans.

This is my fourth web page roll out for a school, and perhaps the one with most promise. In the past, web sites had strong ties to informing prospective families. This web site, with a majority of content within the portal, has strong operational objectives… Continue

Live from Lausanne Laptop Institute

Well, maybe partially alive. I plan to post some observations and notes from the Lausanne Laptop conference at my main blog www.k12converge.com and here if possible.

To begin, I've been posting about my first year in London, a new Advent Netbook (MSI Wind) I starting using just 2 days ago, losing my luggage over the Atlantic, and reading Carol Dweck. (Drinking an entire carafe of coffee at iHop this morning may or may not have been a great idea.)

Meanwh… Continue

A Child's POV

I just finished a blog post about my daughter's growing interest in photography:

http://www.k12converge.com/?p=242

What's interesting about working with an eight year-old and photography is the way that the medium puts her one step back from simply looking at the scene or subject. Too much of this meta-awareness would likely be detrimental to a young child's development, but in chosen ways I can it being both fun and creative. May… Continue

eeePC and Robotics Programming

A quick update on eeePCs...

I've bought three so far. One is hidden as a xmas gift for my two kids next week. The other two were briefly handed around the IT office before being appropriated by the High School First Robotics team. I had an update today that they are now successfully using them to write and compile the programming of their robot, and the eeePCs have the right cost and form factor to travel with them to the competition.

Overall, I give all credit to the program… Continue

Yeah, the 780/thin client wasn't ready for prime time but I'm pleased to see the concepts are still kicking around and gaining ground with newer and more robust implementations (OLPC, EEE PC, etc), not to mention the fact that Redmond is -for now-, conspicuously absent (nice try though...) from these lighter weight, solid state platforms. That and coming surge of online access to productivity software makes this an exciting time to be involved. We'll see how all that plays out sooner than later I suspect.

Lower TCO and higher ROI for families/students is the appeal these solutions have for me. I still feel 1 to 1full on laptop programs are prohibitively expensive for the majority.

I do hope to attend Lausanne again Jim, but we'll have to see how it stacks up with the summer workload. TSS is a year round non profit with Residential Ed. groups all summer and along with supporting the work of TSS Wildlife Expeditions and the Conservation Research Center, I may have to take a break next year. Reminds me to get Stuart my new info soon.

London seems to suit you and I'm glad to hear that's the case. You both got lucky methinks...

Cheers!

Hi Jim,

Good to see you too, my friend. We are enjoying Wyoming very much. Takes a bit of getting used to (like you wouldn't know anything bout that...LOL). I feel I'm already making a great deal of difference here at TSS and that is making the transition somewhat easier. Excellent work going on here. Still interested in hearing about how yours is going...

I saw your interest in the OLPC thread/project and recall our discussion some 5 years ago about getting to this point and beyond. I will follow that one (and your take on it) with great interest.

Happy holidays to you and yours Jim!

I like your sailboat, and your sailing area.

The one in the picture above is a Sigma 38 I sailed on the Solent with a sailing group. It competed in the Fastnet race this year (but needed new standing rigging afterwards). I regret not sailing when we lived in Maryland-- but I did take a Rainbow 24 out on the Chesapeake during a visit to the AIMS retreat a couple of years ago.

Yes, its a Sea Sprite 23. The photo was taken while my brother-in-law and I were attempting the Governor's Cup Race, an overnight race from Annapolis to St. Mary's College (ran out of wind in the morning). How about your photo?

Cycling in London is fun, but today we just walked in Hampstead Heath and faced some of the craziness at Piccadilly Circus as my daughter had a party to attend there. We caught a glimpse of Michael Caine and Jude Law as they did the red carpet thing for opening of Sleuth at the Odeon West End.

Hey Jim,
Is there a list-serv or site for overseas schools? I'd like to pursue connecting to more international schools. Like Fred, I've also appreciated your blog and hearing about your experiences biking the streets of London :)
