Digital Social Networking w/o the Computers...

I've been asked to design and teach a 1 or 2 session adult ed course on social networking, including Facebook and Linkedin, and perhaps Twitter. The participants may likely be seniors, though these days I'm not exactly sure what age constitutes a senior. I can craft the curriculum in any format I like and decide the time frame. There is only one catch – we will not be using computers.

I am intrigued by this for two reasons. The first is my love of participating in professional development and a… Continue

Global Google, Mired Microsoft

Google Gets Ready to Rumble With Microsoft, an article in today's (12/16/07) Business section of the Sunday NY Times, is a fascinating look at the vastly different approaches of the two companies in terms of their business models and how they view the rest of us.

Google understands that the world is a global place, where people interact and collaborate, and where people want… Continue

Rain in Spain...Synapses in Brain...Professional Development

Am doing a core dump of some ideas that have been mulling around in my brain for quite some time...ideas which I've discussed with Fred but have yet to set to text on a page. My writing has been provoked by Jane Brody's Tuesday article in the Science section of the NY Times: Mental Reserves Keep Brains Agile.

Brody's article is the second in a series of two that deals with memory. She discus

Leveling the Playing Field

Just listened to Alex and Don chatting at the recent Mohonk NYSAIS Unconference for Managers of IT and Librarians. Among other ideas, Don mentioned leveling the playing field among the conference participants. This struck a nerve with me because that idea is behind my proposal for my school's Professional Development Day this coming April. Below is the pitch I made to our Curriculum Council or you can read the full… Continue

What? Another Blog?

Major discovery when starting out: blogging only works when I have something to say that will sustain my writing over a longer term than merely emails. In August, 2006, I began experimenting with a FirstClass blog and use it to write about in-house professional development at my school. My ah-ha moment came in April, 2007, when I began Neurons Firing (http://neurons.wordpress.com), my blog about the brain, learning, and professional development. It is m… Continue

I am popping up all over. Just back from a 4 day think tank on girls and STEM (science, tech, engineering and Math) disciplines. It was interesting.. Makes me want to try an online class myself. Have you taken one before. I know Ellen Baru did through PBS and she loved it. I was thinking of trying something really hard for me like algebra or biology.

The picture is me at the end of a long day at work. Drew it using some primitive OS9 software and have used it ever since.

Am looking forward to learning a lot.

Hi Laurie,
It was nice meeting you at the CAIS CT Tech Retreat in April. Thank you for letting us pick your brain a little bit! I loved the videos you shared.

It was great meeting you (and your husband!) too! You gave great opening and closing keynotes that really framed our experience in St. Michael's. That was the best retreat I've been to yet! I'm so excited to start using and playing with all the neat tools I learned about. You should join our AIMSTech "twibe" if you have time. We are hoping to use it as an area for collaboration beyond the retreat. Hope you have a somewhat relaxing rest of the week back at your school! And, we'll have to make time to meet up for a meal some time. :)

Ok, forget that last post--found someone with a dongle! Yay! See you later on today!

Hi Laurie...Quick question--did you use a dongle to connect your macbook to the projector for your keynote last night? I forgot mine, and I'm supposed to be projecting at a session right after lunch. If you used one, is there any way I could borrow it, or if not, what did you do to connect? I'd appreciate any help you could give! Thanks.

Hi Laurie,

Glad to hear that you are teaching your students about good layout and design, even though (you claim!) you are not talented in that area. Even a little is better than not at all!

As far as my classes are concerned, they are part of the Computer Science Dept, mostly due to the intense use of the computers as tools to create the designs. I do often chat with the Art Dept, though, and we constantly share our projects and work with each other. One of the art teachers and I are hoping to put together a collaborative lesson or two about design principles/elements next year.

Less than two weeks until the retreat! See you there!

Athough I have to pay my own way, I am planning to be at the AIMS retreat and bringing some folks with me. I look forward to catching up. I'm so proud of all your work. BTW, I will be leaving Stone Ridge School this summer and starting grad school.
