Legality of recording in the classroom

Hello all,  I was wondering if any of you had looked into the issue of how legal it is to record what goes on in the classroom.   My understanding is that California (where we are) is a state that requires expressed permission before recording.  This is complicated by the fact that our students are minors, and can't sign off on this themselves.   I think it is mostly a non-issue, but with these types of legal grey areas you don't want to find out where the boundries are the hard way.   Anyone…See More

WiFi Printing?

Anyone have a good solution for students printing from their own laptops to school printers?  We are looking strongly at implementing a ‘bring your own device’ 1 to 1 program, but wanted to look at how best to address this problem. Has anyone used printers on an open wireless network?  How does this implementation work? Successes and pitfalls are both appreciated here. See More

What's his name and birthday? Gus is at Beloit College as a freshman and loving it - Rose is starting the college search. And Simon is a 7th grader, so there's still one at middle school. It's quite a ride. I have a puppy in my lap right now, so I guess I'm trying to do the same thing you are, but on a simpler level...

I've been thinking about you and wondering how things are going. Yes, I'll be at NECC. I trust we will get some real time together!

Hi Paul! Things have been busy - between kickstarting the 1:1 laptop pilot program in the 6th grade and getting plans in place for the 7th grade pilot program next year, thigns have been great! I see you have a new little addition to your family - congrats!

Yes I will be attending NEC in DC - finally I can make it when its right at home. :-) We can catch up there perhaps.

Paul,

I don't teach Processing but did supervise an independent study of a student learning processing so I have some idea about how the language works. Steve Lewis, who is a member of this ning, wrote the following to a listserve I belong to.

Acutally Processing is very easy to install. In addition to
Actionscript, I use it extensively in all my teaching in high school.
One of its advantages is that you can get started very easily without
delving into classes and other complex topics. In addition, the many
libraries created for Processing make complex tasks like sound
generation and computer vision quite easy to do. Of all the
programming texts I've ever looked at, only one is usable, and that's
Dan Shiffman's Learning Processing www.learningprocessing.org My 10th
grade students are able to complete really wacky projects with
sensors, barcode readers, QR code readers, webcam input, sine wave
sounds, midi sounds, etc. Actionscript is a great teaching tool for
graphical games, but the lack of libraries pushes me to move on to
Processing after the first year's course.

Hi Paul,

Welcome! There are a number of teachers on this ning who teach processing. Might be worth setting up a group. Took a look a Crossroads' website. Nice to see a different look for an independent school site.

Regards,

Fred
