We will have loaners for the kids. No, we're definitely not the first kids (but the first ones on on our block, though) to do this, and I hope that by being a bit slow we're avoiding some pitfalls. We aren't moving email folders at all--we just s...

"Excellence Without AP" becomes Independent Curriculum Group; see website

This is to announce that the Independent Curriculum Group's website, http://www.independentcurriculum.org/ has now gone live. The ICG is the new and better iteration of the informal group of schools oragnized some years back by Bruce Hammond (then of Sandia Prep in New Mexico) under the "Excellence without AP" banner. Bruce is now the executive director of the ICG and the brains behind the outfit in all ways.

The new site features some stateme… Continue

The Progressive Schools Wiki

For as long as I've worked at a school that uses the word "progressive" to describe what it does, I've had to work hard to define that term in a way that talks about a kind of education that is challenging, comprehensive, intentional, forward-thinking, and intentional. I've also had people ask for that elusive list of "progressive" schools.

Well, there is no list, and defining progressive education and its 21st-century manifestation, the New Progressivism is a complex task. Therefore, I have cr… Continue

Generally in agreement, there's a sign in our football lockeroom that says, "Be about it. Don't talk about it." In terms of jargon, we're using "Disrupting Class" as a key part of our school plan so there is a good amount of disruptive innovation chatter in the air.

Hi! It’s my 3rd year at the school. Not exactly sure how I got to this point, although having a positive private school experience I KNOW played a part in my decision. My first year I remember being surprised by everything that teachers were saying. All the outside conversations where about the kids. Being in development, I felt excluded. Finally this year I am starting to feel like a part of the community and I am slowly falling in love with the private school bubble in San Francisco. I have been watching BCDS in terms of your website, as we are gearing up to start our redesign process. With the current situation, that process of course is getting a bit (I hope) delayed. You guys are really doing a great job with communications. Let me know when you are in San Francisco. It’s really a magical place. After 8 years here, the city still surprises me. Please say hello to Sam.

Peter,

Thanks for the comment regarding "Path to Purpose." I too have not had the time to finish it...however, I have enjoyed the parts I have read. I have another book for you that might inform our conversation in Chicago... Mindsets by Carol Dweck. It was recommended by Geoff Wagg, the Head of the Upper School at Episcopal Academy in Philly. Geoff is a good friend and a great thinker.

Also, I just finished Outliers. I thought it was great.

I hope that you have a wonderful break. All the best,

Tim

Peter,

Thanks for the note. I gave Berger's book to about 20 teachers to read over the summer. We have been having some small book club meetings to discuss it. We had one last night that went on for almost three hours. Teacher love the concepts that he presents but they struggle with ways to reconcile content and grading... If everyone does excellent work... shouldn't everyone get an A... can we really give everyone an A... what will that say...?

Overall it is a wonderful conversation. I am truly looking forward to our conversation tomorrow at 2:00.

All the best,

Tim

-- BTW - are you going to NAIS this year? I would love to buy you a cup of coffee or a beer to talk about your book. I love it!

Hi Peter,
I went by your blog, can't wait to see what you post next. I downloaded your Unit Design, Backwards template. It's brilliant! Would have commented there, but had to join the group first and felt lazy. I'm putting your name on my copy, but have you considered putting a CCL notification on the bottom of it?

Hey Peter -- Can I get another copy of the article? Kelley Connolly just left my house -- I should have asked her while she was here how to get in! However, now I'm on my way to a physics meeting in Canada. How is the summer going?
