"Excellence Without AP" becomes Independent Curriculum Group; see website

This is to announce that the Independent Curriculum Group's website, http://www.independentcurriculum.org/ has now gone live. The ICG is the new and better iteration of the informal group of schools oragnized some years back by Bruce Hammond (then of Sandia Prep in New Mexico) under the "Excellence without AP" banner. Bruce is now the executive director of the ICG and the brains behind the outfit in all ways.

Generally in agreement, there's a sign in our football lockeroom that says, "Be about it. Don't talk about it." In terms of jargon, we're using "Disrupting Class" as a key part of our school plan so there is a good amount of disruptive innovation chatter in the air.

Hi! It’s my 3rd year at the school. Not exactly sure how I got to this point, although having a positive private school experience I KNOW played a part in my decision. My first year I remember being surprised by everything that teachers were saying. All the outside conversations where about the kids. Being in development, I felt excluded. Finally this year I am starting to feel like a part of the community and I am slowly falling in love with the private school bubble in San Francisco. I have been watching BCDS in terms of your website, as we are gearing up to start our redesign process. With the current situation, that process of course is getting a bit (I hope) delayed. You guys are really doing a great job with communications. Let me know when you are in San Francisco. It’s really a magical place. After 8 years here, the city still surprises me. Thanks for the comment regarding "Path to Purpose." I too have not had the time to finish it...however, I have enjoyed the parts I have read. I have another book for you that might inform our conversation in Chicago... Mindsets by Carol Dweck. It was recommended by Geoff Wagg, the Head of the Upper School at Episcopal Academy in Philly. Geoff is a good friend and a great thinker.

Also, I just finished Outliers. I thought it was great.

Peter,

Thanks for the note. I gave Berger's book to about 20 teachers to read over the summer. We have been having some small book club meetings to discuss it. We had one last night that went on for almost three hours. Teacher love the concepts that he presents but they struggle with ways to reconcile content and grading... If everyone does excellent work... shouldn't everyone get an A... can we really give everyone an A... what will that say...?

Overall it is a wonderful conversation. I am truly looking forward to our conversation tomorrow at 2:00.
