The school in which I am the new Head as of this July went through considerable turmoil last year, as sometimes happens. Part of the upheaval included the departure of a science teacher who was very popular with most students. On Thursday evening, the Board of Trustees of Calmont School, which I joined as Interim Head at the end of January, voted to close its doors at the end of this academic year, following a 30-year history. While the decision was the only viable choice and definitely my recommendation, it bears with it much sorrow and an extraordinary amount of work to be accomplished in the next few months. Nine years ago my husband and I moved to California (home to me) so that I could become head of a very small proprietary school. I left that campus after two years, feeling that my experience with the faculty, students, and families was stellar and that I am definitely an independent -- rather than proprietary -- kind of administrator. This year's NAIS Diversity Award recipient is Reveta Bowers, Head of the Center for Early Education for 38 years. many of us know Reveta because she has also headed the faculty of the Institute for New heads for many years.
