More live blogging

I don't really just go to conferences! This is an exploratory visit. I am checking out this new conference. It's in Raleigh, so practically local. Sleeping at home.

All of these will be on http://gdsmstech.blogspot.com/ I'll set up the blog posts tonight and Thursday night. Friday's sessions look really good.

Here's the list of sessions I'll be attending, see what appeals to you and remember, you can either participate live or just look at the conversation later.

Thursday: March 5

"Reality Education"

I've been reading the book Influencers. One of the authors' assertions in the book is that the best way to establish or change a behavior is through direct experience. How do we provide direct experiences for learners? I would argue that one way to start is by providing direct learning experiences for teachers rather than "workshops."

One of our teachers at Greensboro Day is involved in a fascinating opportunity. Tim Martin, our 8th grade earth science teacher will participate in a clima… Continue

Live blogging today, drop by if you have time.

What careers do independent school graduates go into? 1. Business, 2. Law, 3. Medicine

How do we encourage them to move beyond, without demeaning or diminishing those choices?

I'm in a workshop with Peter Cobb who is helping us revision our mission and curriculum

He with the above observation.

He's already mentioned one of my heroes, Paul Farmer.

Drop by if you have time:

Adolescents with "conduct" problems continue to be less successful later in life.

This is really interesting. A British group did a longitudinal study of just over 3,000 adolescents, starting in 1946. Teachers were asked to evaluate the children's behavior at ages 13 and 15. Those children who were judged to have either mild or severe conduct problems continued to have problems throughout life. The researchers specifically looked at alcohol abuse, divorce, early unplanned pregnancies, social class and a vague "happy with family life." You can read the… Continue

Thanks for the tip! I am very interested in best practices for both website (actually joined to be part of the Whipple Hill group) and best practices for technology education.

Hi, Sarah! Yes, that's me in Rick's book. He is such an amazing, supportive, gracious person, something you don't always see in people so smart, insightful, and forward-thinking. I'm rather humbled by the whole experience.

Lifestream refers to the practice of creating a stream that chronicles one's life through user-generated content primarily via social media. Mark Krynsky can better tell you the origin of the term. Here is MY lifestream.

I am currently experimenting with a "LEARNstream" (for my course CIT 499) which might be considered a lifestream for a learning experience. As I think that I understand a Personal Learning Network, I would guess that a learnstream has relevance, BUT I'm UNfamiliar with PLN so I haveN'T thought about it YET!

Hi Sarah,
Thanks for your welcome. It's true--we have a lot of snow/ice on the ground that doesn't seem to go away. I think you'll be seeing a stream of folks joining from Montclair--we're trying to get the entire MKA faculty into ISENET over the course of the next week as a basis for our new "professional growth process" (which is taking the place of our old evaluation system)!

Thanks, Liz. We just haven't had much luck with getting teachers to give up those blocks, at least not on a consistent enough basis to make any real progress. I hope you see some real success in making this paradigm shift.

I used it pretty actively for about two years and ultimately found it more annoying than useful. Keeping a decent signal to noise ratio took too much care and time. I'm glad others find it wonderful, but it didn't really work for me.

Where is the teacher's time coming from to engage in these more personalized approaches to PD? We would gladly do more of this sort of thing with teachers, but even those motivated to do so have a lot of trouble making time for them.
