Poetic Soundscapes (NAIS Follow-Up)

At the recent NAIS conference, Larry Kahn and I presented a basic introduction to Web 2.0 in the Classrooms of the Future on "Where the Jobs Are, Where the Kids Are, Schools in the Middle." My part of the presentation included reference to a Garageband soundscape project that could be shared on the Internet as a podcast. At the request of some who attended the session, I've included more information on the project below.

For the past two years, my English II… Continue

Digital Natives, Global Citizens

At long last, I've finished editing the wiki , "Digital Natives, Global Citizens," created by my 11th-grade students in response to our semester-long study of technology and civilization as part of my Language Arts class. Other than the editing, the wiki was created and designed by students from start to finish.

Here are some teasers from their Proposals for how to bring these issues to a larger audience:

6th-Graders Explore Excellence

What do 6th-graders have to say on the subject of excellence?

Here is my recent work with a colleague's class. I asked them to respond to photographs that suggested "excellence" (a photograph of Judith Jamieson dancing jubilantly, a photograph of a soccer player sitting on the field looking dejected). Then we moved on to voicethread.com , where they responded to photographs of students as well as their own drawings depicting excellence. Their… Continue

Hello Indies!

I've been blogging for about a year and a half about our small, college preparatory school for low-income students who are all on scholarship. I started the blog as a way to try and reach our faculty and to comment on what we do every day. I have broadened my focus of late, often commenting on ways technology matters to today's teachers. You can check out my Chinquablog -- I'd love to share ideas with you.

Hi Susan,

Sorry that I haven't responded sooner, but life here has been super busy. Just saw Trish and Rebecca on Saturday, and they say hello. We'd love to see Larry & you over the holidays -- send me you email address and I will write a longer email. I am at kadler@calvertonschool.org

I'm sure you know way more about this than I do, but I sure pay attention when it comes up.

Enjoyed your Speed Teaching post on your chinquablog. I am very interested in what we can learn from current brain research in terms of applying it to teaching and learning.
Cheers, Laurie
