Ad-Free Nings for Education

Ning has an initiative to provide advertising-free sites to teachers that want to use a ning site with students in grades 7-12. To apply for an ad-free ning site, you first create your site, and then you go to the Help Center and submit a help request to have the ads removed. Use the subject line: "Ad Removal Request for grades 7 - 12 Education Network." Be sure to include your… Continue

Tuning In to Learning

Miguel Guhlin wrote a great article about an emerging practice in conferences-- encouraging off-site participation. These same technologies could easily be applied to a classroom situation to allow anyone from anywhere to virtually participate in the learning experience. Miguel writes, "What if you could broadcast learning at will via the Internet to a world of learners? How would that change your conception of learning? What if you could interact with pe… Continue

Great Read: Teaching for Tomorrow

I just read Ted McCain's Teaching for Tomorrow (2005). It is a quick (90 page) book that lays out a great rationale for changing pedagogy towards real-world project-based-learning where the teacher step… Continue

Ferlazzo's Fixed-Fights & Best Of Lists

This morning's blog post by Larry Ferlazzo offers excellent advice to those working with teachers to integrate educational technology. He says, "Identify teacher self-interests through listening and relationship-building, and afterwards help them see how using technology can help them get what they want — if it can." Then he mentions a commu…

Seesmic users?

Is anyone else out there experimenting with Seesmic?

I've just started using it, and am intrigued by the possibilities... it's "video conversations"... kind of like twitter, but easier to follow threads, and all of it done over video not text, so you retain all of the non-verbal co…

Hi Demetri,
I just saw the NAIS ning on the listserv. My first thought was, "oh no, not another place to keep up with!" Twitter, Google Reader, blogs, this ning, Open PD,and now diigo--I'm not sure I can handle another group:)

Hi, Demetri - It took me a LONG time to get back to ISEnet. Your original question to me was about laptops in our Upper School - the kids use either Lenovo ThinkPads or MacBooks. This year's 9th grade was the first year where MacBooks outnumbered ThinkPads. Some of our faculty use tablets, but as a dual platform school I don't think it's fair to offer an option that only exists in one OS, so I'm waiting for the the iPhone equivalent of the MacBook - the iMacBook?

I haven't tried the one next to The Pond. What's its name? I like Thai Spice on Royal Oaks. By the way, the CCDS workshop was amazing! I am so glad I went!

Wow! Really? That is so cool that you were at NCS. SO few people know about it and I think it is so incredibly special. I knew I recognized your name and that must be it....must have seen it in one of their alum mags. Don Rand is still there, I see....AMAZING!!

Demetri, thank you. I am clear that an integrous, designed community of a school can re-arrange peer pressure in the serrvice of responsiblity. The prep school I attended is a case in point. The school culture, most notably a comprehensive work program, caused a major shift in the observable nature of peer pressure at the school. Youth culture and peer pressure are such, that it takes a strong force of will to interrupt it. And for sure, it can be done. That which interrupted the status quo of peer pressure became a source of pride among students at the time, and later a really intense source of pride for alumni.

Demetri, This is a wonderful idea! Thanks for sharing it with the rest of the faculty. The Middlebury community of English teachers has been bound together for sometime through FirstClass, but I think you have provided an excellent resource!

Demetri,
I started a discussion about having PGPs for libraries and I thought I started it so it would appear on the librarians' group page, but it went to the home page instead. What did I do wrong and can I move it?
