PDP Update

Overall I'm interested in helping students become more independent learners and more self-motivated.

I'm most drawn to this category of the rubric (based on both my "gut" interest and the results of my survey)...

"Engages students by making learning relevant and authentic in the subject area and in the education of

the whole student (e.g., connects learning to students’ lives and to a global perspective)."

but also this one...

My PDP: A Post-Survey Reflection

After reading my students' responses, some confirmation of what I already knew was inevitable, but I was surprised by my response to this confirmation: a "what now?" feeling that I'm not sure how to overcome.

I knew that my writing on the board was not particularly legible. This has been confirmed.

I knew that students were used to more presentations/interactive work, and less passage analysis. Yes, this is true.

Perhaps, I can learn to write more neatly on the… Continue

PDP Reflection:

Working on this PDP has been a very helpful experience as it forces me to reflect on issues in my professional growth that I often simply do not take the time to address because of schedule constraints.

After reading student questionnaires and reflecting upon my teaching, I have come up with the following areas to address. I have labeled the section of the Lifelong Learners Rubric that… Continue

Reflect

Are you surprised by anything you have learned?

What are you going to do to address the trends?

What do you think is most critical for immediate attention?

What will you need to address later, over the long-term?

How does the rubric inform your direction?

Plan

Let the polling begin!

Today I put up my student questionnaire so that I can get feedback from my classes about my teaching and their learning. I decided to use Moodle so that I can cross-tabulate my responses and see percentages. Of course the first respondent was a disgruntled student who trashed me up one way and down the other. Now, as responses come leaking in, I am getting a clearer and less demoralizing picture.

Here is a rundown of the questions I asked. All are rated "Strongly Disagree, Disagree,… Continue

A Cure for Nature Deficit Disorder-Technology?

Riding my bicycle down the Baltimore & Annapolis Trail, I passed a small family group. Mom was on her cell and Dad engrossed with his blackberry. Just another example of societies disconnectedness to the natural world, I thought. Reading Louv’s Last Child in the Woods (http://richardlouv.com/) has had a deep impact on me and I can not resolve this. What was once taken for granted, days of childhood play and exploration over local hill and dale, has been replaced by endless hours in front of… Continue
