Dan Meyer likes to teach

I came across a few new videos thanks to Pam Livingston who queried the ED-TECH list-serv for videos to show a group of principals she is working with. I hadn't seen Dan Meyer's video about how a projector changed the dynamics of his teaching. More importantly than just the projector, he discusses how his… Continue

Is Google Making Us Stupid?

Thanks to Tim Fish for passing along this link to an Atlantic article, Is Google Making Us Stupid?. I love how Tim provokes important and interesting conversations. He's good at pulling the pin on a big issue (grenade) and tossing it out there!

The first part of the article says that people don't read in depth (books, articles, etc.) any more, they just skim and flit across… Continue

Doing Honest Work - call for authors

We're working on an issue of Knowledge Quest called “Doing Honest Work” and always like to feature the work of independent school educators. Please take a look at the editorial focus and questions and let me know if there are topics or ideas you'd be interested in addressing. Note: We welcome articles by educators, administrators, tech folks, learning specialists, etc.

Editorial Focus: Examines the key issues and practical aspects of ethics education.

What is ethics… Continue

Force-feeding the network

Monday night was the first class of a summer term course I'm co-teaching online for Hopkins. The first week is very intense because we are networking everyone together by having everyone set up a blog and subscribe to everyone else's blog, set up a del.icio.us account and add everyone else to their network, and then try to deliver some content on top of this. :)

Monday was a little overwhelming, but everyone handled it really well. I'm looking forward to reading their blog posts as… Continue

Sowing the SEED of Change

I'm still abuzz following Friday's SEED conference in Chicago. Billed as a "one-day conference on design, entrepreneurship, and inspiration," SEED delivered an enthralling, personal look at how creative visionaries have fused their passion with a boatload of talent and elbow grease to change the business landscape of the 21st century.

Carlos Segura of Segura, Inc. spoke eloquently about the need for… Continue

Call for School Photos

Can all y'all pass this along to your admissions/marketing folks for me:

I need more pictures of schools for my site: http://privateschool.about.com

We recently did a redesign of the site and, as a result, I have lots of room to publish photos of schools on my splash page. It's free too. My only stipulation is that I do not want face shots of students unless the photos are 4-5 years old.

I think it is a win-win for the schools and me. I get to publish some beautiful… Continue

Worthy Read on Libraries and the nature of Information

Robert Darnton, Director of the University Library at Harvard, wrote an interesting article about the evolution of knowledge through history. It reminded me of the old pysch experiment where an event happens and everyone's account is different than the other spectators. Thanks to David Colon, the Academic Dean at my school for sharing it with me.

I found the section on how instable and transient Shakespeare's plays have been to be my favorite part.

I'd highly recommend it… Continue
