To help stretch our professional development dollars further this summer, Collegiate School is offering a number of one day workshops in-house and we would love to have teachers from other schools join us schools.
We'll be offering 10 different workshops, a full day workshop costs $75 and includes lunch. If you would like to learn more about the offerings, please visit this site:

I attended the VAIS tech retreat over the week-end and many of the resources are available online. Here are the highlights:
Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach's is a professor at William and Mary and works frequently with Will Richardson. Her two presentations were recorded and available online.

NAIS released their booklet
Stories of Excellence at the annual convention in Chicago. The stories contain 20 examples of innovative teaching. A PDF version is available from this page:
http://www.nais.org/resources/index.cfm?ItemNumber=151611
I think they offer concrete examples of some of the theories swirling around teaching, learning, and innovation. I'd love to know your thoughts, please share them.

The report,
Living and Learning With New Media, is an initial step in cataloging and understanding how young people use the Internet. In general, it found many positive benefits.
The NY Times wrote a review that you can find here:

Here's a link to the primary author's page with different versions of the report.…

Michigan State hosts the Center for Language Education and Research (CLEAR.) As part of the center’s mission, they provide many free web-based tools for language learning. Their primary focus is world languages, but I could imagine a number of creative uses in many different subjects.
I am amazed by the elegance, simplicity, and benefit these programs provide. I think these programs are the wave of the future and highly recommend them to anyone working with students to increase oral proficiency…

Based on some of the recent brain research, and in an attempt to have some fun, I'm looking for any number of video games for game systems or computers to help acquire world languages.
Does anyone have any experience with this type of gaming? Can anyone suggest a source for Karaoke discs or files in French or Spanish? Any PS2, Xbox or Wii movement or music games that use French or Spanish
Thanks in advance for your help and consideration,
-Jamie

Sounds like an oxymoron doesn't it? Don't institutions typically stymie innovation? Aren't innovators rebels with a cause?
But that's what I'm looking for, schools that have developed a culture or process for continual innovation.
My school would like to visit some as we prepare for our next strategic plan (which is no longer a plan but something more malleable after Rob Evan's writing,
Strategic Thinking.)
Please let me know what you think of my list. Anyone here know anyone at these…

Robert Darnton, Director of the University Library at Harvard, wrote an interesting article about the evolution of knowledge through history. It reminded me of the old pysch experiment where an event happens and everyone's account is different than the other spectators. Thanks to David Colon, the Academic Dean at my school for sharing it with me.
I found the section on how instable and transient Shakespeare's plays have been to be my favorite part.
I'd highly recommend it and would love to kno…

I've been thinking about asking students to have devices like iphones instead of laptops or tablets. To me, it seems the greatest value is in access to information. I'd be willing to forgo the production benefits of the larger devices if I could also forgo the cost, infrastructure, and support that they require.
I look with a bit of envy at those countries that skipped the land line infrastructure and went straight to wireless. I'm amazed by the pace of technological progress and all the differ…

I'm helping a teacher prepare a case study of one of her technology integration projects. She'll share this study on Monday at the VAIS tech conference. I went looking for good questions and found the ones involving teacher researchers to be better suited to our needs than the tech integration questions.
Do you have any question you would add?
Here are the ones I've found:
1) What did you want students to know or be able to do as a result of the project?
2) How did technology influence the p…

How do we define the boundaries of what we do and what we don't do when someone has a technology problem?
This week-end at the Virginia Association of Independent Schools' Technology retreat, I'll be taking part in a conversation about establishing boundaries. Please share what have yo…

Next Monday, we'll spend a professional development day considering the following prompt:
The world is changing, content is cheap, and collaboration is easy. We should....
How would you answer that question? You can follow along with the discussion Collegiate-Richmond at this wiki.

I'd love to hear your thoughts!

I read Nancy Atwell's, “In the Middle” and that did it.
I've been a strong believer in a student-centered constructivist approach every since. Much of what I've done in technology has been inspired by that vision and like Billy Bragg in his song, “The Great Leap Forward,” I sometimes
wistfully pine for the day the majority would fe

I've read a couple of articles about different countries or regions encouraging people to do without their Internet, phones and computers for a day or two and I'm intrigued by the idea. Has anyone done this with their school? How'd it go and what did you think?

Part to whole, whole to part, I think both approaches have their merits but right now my school and I are exploring technology integration through five big questions. So far they've helped us start some good conversations with teachers, departments, and administrators around our school. What do you think? Would you add any questions? Revise any? Do you have examples that would help illustrate these themes? Please contribute your thoughts.
