ChildrenOnline.org February Newsletter: To Friend of Not to Friend?

Many high schools are grappling with the question of teachers, coaches, advisor and dorm staff friending students.  We address this question in our newsletter.  The overwhelming response from independent schools we visit and hear from is NOT to friend students.  Read more at ChildrenOnline.org or download the pdf file here.

Thanks Doug--timely and thoughtful.  I'm going to recommend your newsletter to several colleagues.  I encourage faculty to make an official page for their class if they wish to use FB.  I myself find it the best way for students to share videos they've made for class.  Not quite as open as YouTube and we just don't have the bandwidth to host videos ourselves on campus. The other advantage of a FB page, is that the community is limited to the page--we're not friends elsewhere on FB--I can't see their "stuff" and the kids can't see mine!

Sarah, Thanks for your comment.  I have a wonderful recommendation for videos online. We purchased a subscription to Vimeo.com and it is very cheap and offers excellent options for making videos private.  e.g. we post lots of videos and select that they can only appear on brookwood.edu.  You can also upload videos in a variety of sources and Vimeo will translate them to the best streaming quality, including HD videos.  And it gives you stats on how often videos are viewed.
