The school in which I am the new Head as of this July went through considerable turmoil last year, as sometimes happens. Part of the upheaval included the departure of a science teacher who was very popular with most students. His replacement found herself with limited equipment and only a couple of lesson plans, one of which was for K-2 students to draw a picture of a scientist. Not surprisingly, most of them drew the departed teacher. A couple of weeks ago, in the remarkable science room that she has created in her short tenure, the science teacher again asked her K-2 students to draw a picture of a scientist. A couple drew her; most drew themselves.
